Obtain New Firmware

The radio uses firmware to operate the device. The firmware is available at this location: https://github.com/nicsure/quansheng-dock-fw/releases/. The newest firmware is at the top of the page. To operate the Quansheg Dock software, your radio must have at least firmware version 0.32.8x. Click on the link that says firmware.packed.bin.

Firmware Uploader/Downloader

You can change the radio’s program by uploading a new set of firmware. You can also download a copy of the program on the radio as a backup when making changes. To obtain the firmware uploader/downloader software, click this link https://github.com/OneOfEleven/k5prog-win/blob/main/k5prog_win.exe and then click on the download button on the right side of the page, shown here:

The downloaded file is a Windows executable file, and you will probably receive messages from your browser saying this file is scary, untested, or worse. No installation is required. Save the file to a folder you can locate again and run the program from that location.

The program loads the following panel: Select the serial port connected to your radio first. You should see the statement below when you select the correct port. Then, select the Serial speed of 38400 – k5/k6.

Click “Read Configuration” to download a copy of the firmware on your radio. You will need to provide a location and filename to store the file. Alternatively, click on “Write Configuration” to upload a new firmware. You must provide the location and filename of the new .bin file to be uploaded.

Quansheng Dock Software

The Quansheng Dock Software can program the radio directly from your computer screen using a serial interface cable connected to the mic and speaker jacks. You can also use this cable to operate the radio using your mouse and keyboard while displaying the radio’s screen on your computer. You can download this program from the link: https://github.com/nicsure/QuanshengDock/releases/. The current releases are at the top. Click on the zip file as shown to download the zip file.

Unzip the zip file’s contents to a folder and run the Quansheng.exe program from that folder. This program is compiled with Microsoft’s .net and should run on Windows, Linux, and Apple. The Quansheng Dock program should look like this:

Ham Radio All-In-One-Cable (AIOC)

This all-in-one-cable is a nifty device that provides a USB sound card to an analog audio talkie. This is still in development, but Duane Angles AA5KD has made this work on his Quansheng radio to send Winlink messages to the local Winlink VHF servers. Here’s the info — stand by for more updates: https://github.com/skuep/AIOC.
